About me
This year I am celebrating 48 years in the entertainment business! What a time I’ve had, travels to America, Italy, France, Germany and Malaysia, and stints with ENO, Glyndebourne, D’Oyly Carte, Lincoln Theatre Royal, Charles Court Opera, and starring in the West End as a village idiot, a jewellery salesman, depraved judge and lothario painter(not all at the same time I would add)! I have been Chairman of Music Hall at the famous Players' Theatre (now sadly defunct) as well as an artiste on the music hall bill.I’ve worked with Charles Court Opera a lot over the last 6 years, starting with pantomime, and have been Emperor of China, King Hrothgar, Emperor of Japan (Mikado), Alderman Fitzwarren, Sergeant of Police and Sir Joseph Porter KCB to name but a few. Also at the Buxton Gilbert and Sullivan Festival I have added Adam Goodheart to my portfolio of G&S characters
I have b een very lucky to have worked with the greats of the industry, like Sir Thomas Allen, Lynda Baron, Sir John Tomlinson, Arthur Askey, Leslie Crowther, Sir Mark Elder and Michael Ball, to name a few
My concert repertoire is extensive, ranging from Baroque to 20th Century.
Also very busy teaching singing to the opera and musical theatre stars of tomorrow.
Additional skills:
Excellent sight reader, can sing in almost all known western languages (including American!)
Actor:
I am an experienced performer of both opera and musical theatre. Next year I shall be celebrating 50 years years in the industry. My career has spanned Pantomime, Musical Theatre, Rock Ballad singer in Germany, Music Hall, Opera, Film and Television. My west End debut was as a village idiot, but I also played God in the same production. At the world famous Players’ Theatre I have chaired Music Hall bills, and been Abanazar and Ugly Sister (not at the same time!).
I was a founder member of the New D'Oyly Carte Company at the Savoy and spent several years at the London Coliseum with English National Opera where roles included Shogun’s Mother Pacific Overtures - working with Stephen Sondheim - died and gone to heaven! -, Frosch Die Fledermaus, Harry Easter Street Scene, Mars Orpheus in the Underworld, Alcindoro La bohème and Wagner Faust. In 2008 Simon returned to ENO to cover the title role in The Mikado and went on to perform the role of Jupiter in the professional UK première of Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic operetta Thespis for the Langdon Down Centre Trust. Most recently I performed the roles of The Mikado, Adam Goodheart and Private Willis for the Gilbert & Sullivan Opera company at Buxton Opera House.
I have performed roles in La Traviata, Don Giovanni, Così fan tutte, Falstaff and La bohème for Music Theatre London, Don Magnifico Cenerentola and First Soldier Salome La Monnaie Brussels, Colonel Pickering My Fair Lady for Opera Omaha and Portland Opera and Antinoo Il Ritorno d’Ulisse Batignano Festival.
Other roles include Dulcamara L’elisir d’amore for Opera Box; Count Horn A Masked Ball, Rocco Fidelio, Zaccaria Nabucco and covers roles of Count Figaro and Pistol Falstaff for Glyndebourne Touring Opera. In the West End Simon has performed the role of George Dillingham Aspects of Love Really Useful Group; Roland Cassard Umbrellas of Cherbourg Partus Productions; Toto Beyond the Rainbow Harold Fielding Productions; appeared in Evita and played Judge Turpin Sweeney Todd Newpalm Productions in Holland Park.
Film credits include La bohème, Falstaff, Warlock: Some Little Joy for Capriol Films and Out of the Shadows for Pearl Pictures. Did some work on Quartet with Dustin Hoffman directing, quite a bit of tutorial filming for the College of Law portraying a judge.
With Charles Court Opera I have done pantomime and Gilbert and Sullivan
Additional skills:
I am a professor of singing at TrinityLaban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in Greenwich, and have built up a private practice, teaching any standard from 'petrified' to professional, and all styles from Grand Opera to Heavy Metal.
